Shameless bragging post about my son

At least I warned you up front.

Camden has had a language explosion in the past few weeks. It thrills me to no end to hear him trying out new words and sounds. Not only has he had a speaking explosion, but a signing explosion as well.

We've been using the videos from Signing Time to teach him sign language. We really wanted him to be able to communicate with us in more than one way and to be able to sign words he can't yet say. Since his spoken vocabulary is only about 20 words total, signing has been great for us.

In the last week, he has had a HUGE signing explosion! This past week, he did 14 new signs. He even signed his first sentence by signing "candy" and then "please". After I gave him a piece of candy, he signed "thank you." He's now using sign to tell us what he wants instead of just whining and throwing a tantrum when he can't say the word and we can't understand him.

For a long time, I wondered if teaching him sign was paying off. The videos entertained him, but didn't seem to be sinking in. He would do a sign here and there, but nothing with much consistency (except dog). But now I see the sign explosion and it thrills me to no end. I love watching him learn and I love that he can communicate with us better.

So there you have it - my shameless bragging post about Camden. I've been wanting to tell the world about his signing explosion because it thrills me so much. What would you like to brag about with your kids this week? Tell me in your comments!

Hey girl...
Thanks for this post. I'm teaching Daisy signs, too... although sometimes I'm not as regular as I should be about it. It's good to know that it (eventually) pays off.
Happy Holidays!

I'm so glad he's "exploding!" When their minds FINALLY grasp concepts it's SO amazing to watch! :)
My bragging would be about how Cam's finally learned how the whole sticker chart works! YAY for sticking with a concept, even when you can't see the end results! :)

That is so fun! I really enjoyed doing signs with Elsie. Unfortunately, I haven't kept it up since she started her verbal language explosion. So, don't stop!

That's totally brag worthy. It makes me wish we had stuck with signing after he started speaking. The only one he used after that was the one for milk (nurse), which I prefered he wasn't screaming anyway.

Um, this is your blog... there is zero shame in reporting how brilliant your son is! Brag the day away... we all love to hear about it. I promise!

Yeah, my kid can clap and show us his belly on demand... oh and he can sit, stay and roll over.

I thought signing was a cool idea but we haven't done it with Miss A. It sounds like we should have. She's just getting to the grunting, whining and tantrum throwing now when she can't get across what she wants.

Brag away!
And I'm so happy to hear about the success of "Signing Time". I ordered that DVD a few weeks ago and plan on starting it w/Kelly after the holidays. She's WAY behind in her speech (as in, pretty much only says "Eeee" and she's 16 months) She's a happy girl now, but I know how horrible it will be in a few months when she really wants to communicate w/us and can't. So yay!

Yay for Cam! :)

Bragging... ummm... he's been so moody/naughty this week. But... He took his allowance $3, and bought toys for his friends at school from the Santa shop they have there. I thought it was so sweet that he would give up his own money- he loves his money. LOL!
